Our name, SANHWE (pronounced san-shweh), means “Take Another Look” in Twi, a Ghanaian language. It is an invitation to rediscover the beauty and possibilities that emerge when African culture, agriculture, and craftsmanship come together.
We handcraft botanical, gender-neutral fragrances in small batches using responsibly sourced natural ingredients from Ghana and beyond. We work with organic and wild-harvested botanicals, alongside a small number of ethically sourced natural ingredients of animal origin. On a smaller scale, we incorporate carefully selected, naturally derived aromatic molecules.
In addition to this, we extract a number of local botanical ingredients in Ghana into fine natural fragrance extracts through traditional and innovative methods. As we grow, our ambition is to go further, to uncover the aromatic potential of more Ghanaian and African botanicals, and explore how post-harvest losses and agricultural by-products can become valuable fragrance materials for perfumery and cosmetics.
While we may create fragrances to different specifications for our brand partners, every fragrance under the SANHWE name is crafted without synthetic fragrance materials or synthetic additives (excludes our vintage collection).
Our commitment to intentionality extends to how we build the business: seeking smallholder farmers and suppliers who work with smallholder farmers also, particularly across Africa; exploring more recycled and circular materials in our packaging; and in the near future, creating opportunities that empower women and support sustainable livelihoods.
The vision is long-term. The intention starts now. We are building SANHWE to show what is possible when African resources, natural perfumery and creativity come together, creating fragrances that carry our stories while building value far beyond the bottle.

The Founder’s Journey
SANHWE was born from a lifelong fascination with science, nature, and agriculture. Founded by Ernestina Kobi, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and graduate of Ashesi University with a degree in Business Administration, the brand reflects a lifelong curiosity about the natural world and the artistry of fragrance.
Long before discovering perfumery, Ernestina was drawn to science. From her early school years, she found herself captivated by chemistry and physics, a curiosity that deepened through the International Baccalaureate programme, where rigorous laboratory work laid a strong scientific foundation. Although she eventually chose to study Business Administration (after deciding she had sacrificed enough glassware in the chemistry lab!), her fascination with how materials transform and interact never faded. That same curiosity would later find its home in the world of botanical fragrance.
Today, SANHWE stands as a tribute to thoughtful formulation, sustainable sourcing, and the timeless art of perfumery.
